————————————————-

I’m proud to announce the release of RSDownloader 2.0. The next version of the batch download tool for the Rapidshare.com Premium service.

Quite a lot of new features (about a zillion), the program is nevertheless more simple and stable than ever. I’ve also provided an online Quickstart manual (link include in the installation and in the program). After a while I’ll also make a FAQ.

RSDownloader 2

This is a list of all the new features (changelog):

  • Pauzing and resuming downloads (even after a restart).
  • Restoring queue on restart
  • Autologin
  • Saving links to file (for exchanging links)
  • Saving queues to a file (to resume/load later
  • Faster login and link checker
  • Easy to use (un)installer
  • Scheduling downloads
  • Entire new download framework (built by me :-) , possibly released opensource someday)
  • Update functionality
  • Ability to copy passwords to clipboard
  • Open finished files on doubleclick (requested)
  • Log file

I suggest the first thing you do is read some bits in the QuickStart guide, configure the program (account / directory).

Note: The following things are required.

Goodbye Gent, Hello Brussels…

Today I handed in the keys to my studio in Gent, where I spent two years enjoying the finer things in life and offcourse doing some studying :-) . I will continue my studies at VUB where I will study Computer Sciences. Feels like a new chapter in my life, and certainly it wasn’t an easy decision to leave the homebase (Gent) for the unknown but I’m really looking forward to my first day at the university, will be continued ;-) .

Feest in het Park!

I spent the weekend in Oudenaarde, at the Donkvijvers, where me and my lovely girlfriend attended the “Feest in het Park” music festival! Here’s what we saw and what I thought of it!

Friday

CoS

After pitching our tent, we headed for the festival grounds to watch Mintzkov, a Belgian softrock band (Mimosa, Push the faders high) who’ve just released their new album. This was a rather doll concert, quite less than I’ve expected of them actually. The female singer obviously didn’t feel like singing that much… After that we checked out Cosy Mosy who was playing a DJ set. Nice beats and a nice location! After Cosy Mosy we went to see Chicks on Speed (Wordy rappinghood, Fashion rules, …). I have to say those gals are about the craziest I’ve ever seen. Weird dancing and ever weirder songs like “My space”, “Art Rules” and much much more. Loads of fun and catchy tunes. Respect for the ladies!

On friday night we watched as Coldcut took over the Grand Mix room with it’s “Journey through sound” mix. This was a really stunning blend of both crowdpleasers (Sweet dreams) and some more underground tracks (Assasin de la police!). Also the DJ had this nifty turntable which allowed him to scratch both sound and video, really nice!

Saturday

Eikes

After a nice breakfast with some bacon & eggs and a nice barbeque lunch (which isn’t a sure thing at a festival), we headed out to the festival grounds to see Soapstarter. I hadn’t heard of the band before but they were really, really good. Easy listening funky rock. Absolutely one of the revelations of Fihp! After Soapstarter we checked out Buscemi. When you go and see Buscemi, you kinda know what to expect: funky exotic (Balkan) sounds. If you hear one song by Buscemi, you’ve kinda heard them all and I SWEAR I can hear that woman say “Henin” (as in Justine Henin) in the song “Sahib Balkan”.
After Buscemi I wanted to see Admiral Freebie, not because I’m a fan of his music but just because I wanted to see him live. I have to say I enjoyed his concert, great music and a great guy :-) !

Sunday

Puppetmastaz

Off to the festival grounds for the last day with some known and unknown names to see! First thing we saw was Jerboa. I already saw him perform a set last year at the Pukkelpop festival where it was just him, his turntables and an EFX box or two -) . For a while now he’s taken his music to the next level. Percussion, guitars and synths included, his (or their, now) beats were smoother than honey, another really great concert!
After Jerboa we saw the Puppetmastaz, which was a superfun concert! As the name suggest, they perform a kind of puppetry act in which the puppets rap some delicious lines and drop some bomb beats, really fun to watch and a nice sound. Calvin Harris (”acceptable in the eighties…”) was next on the list, fun rock with an electronic touch. Quite good, altough not really my thing…
After Harris Ladytron perfomed their usual sterile set which lacked the fun and enthousiasm we received from other bands, a bit dissapointing… Since we had more than an hour before Chromeo kicked in, we went to see Flip Kowlier (who’s going solo nowadays). If he’d worn a cowboy hat, I would have sworn he was a country singer (Jihaaaa!). I like their sound but I really HATE it that he only sings in that Western Flemish accent, only one tenth of Belgium understand, that’s just a pitty…
Down to the last one, Chromeo, which to my surprise is just a two member band, blew the roof of with an amazing, funky set! Really nice! Sexy time! :-)

Chromeo

Jolle poepje!

While I feel I’m getting old for these kind of festivals, I had a great time with my girlfriend. Saw some great bands and spoiled ourselves gastronomically (do you know anyone else that brings passion fruit to a festival? :-) ), maybe hopefully till next year Donkvijvers!

Belgian IT-ers best trained!

According to this article, the level of expertise of Belgian IT experts is the heighest in the whole of Europe! Unfortunately, we also have the least possiblities for continuing IT studies (which isn’t really necessary because we are already that good lol, just kidding :-D ).

RSDownloader 2.0, almost there!

I’m pleased to inform everyone that the new version of RSDownloader will be available in one to two weeks. Every feature I intended to put in has made it (and some extra’s offcourse ;-) ). Not much has changed to the GUI since my previous post. On the left side of the form a menu is displayed which contains the most used functions. Here’s what’ll be in the next release up till now:

  • Pauzing and resuming downloads (even after a restart).
  • Restoring queue on restart
  • Autologin
  • Saving links to file (for exchanging links)
  • Saving queues to a file (to resume/load later
  • Faster login and link checker
  • Easy to use installer
  • Scheduling downloads
  • Entire new download framework (built by me :-) , possibly released opensource someday)

That’s about it I guess. Since a lot of functions have been added, I do feel obliged to include some kind of manual so you can all use the program to it’s full extent. I’ll possibly do this after the release but I’m not sure yet (it’s never a good idea to document after a release :-) ), so stay put for more news!

Weird (Http)Webrequest delay

I’ve been using the WebRequest class for a while now and what bothers me is that the first time a webrequest is created, it can take about 10 seconds before it fetches a webpage. All attemps after that work within a second. Now I’ve found the solution for this issue. It seems the WebRequest class tries to look for proxy settings when it is first called, this results in the delay. To remove this delay, you should simply do the following:

request.Proxy = null;

Microsoft Summerschool, the aftermath!

Last week I was in Gent where I took part in Msft.’s summerschool on the .NET 2.0 Core (in preparation for a certification exam). Our teacher was Mr. Sven Mus (who is founder of Neomatics and board member at the Visual Studio Users Group Belgium.

While I learned quite some new things, most of all this week has got me thinking about my future in the IT industry and where I want to be in ten-fifteen years. Still no doubt in my mind that I’ll continue my studies at VUB next year though…

Talking about VUB, 3 students of the Robotics department where also at the Summerschool. They were especially interested in using the .NET Framework to control their robots. They were working on 2 robots. The first, Lucy, is a humanoid, walking robot which features some advanced technology, I was really impressed! The second is Anty, a hug-robot which detects kid’s emotions and can respond to them. The primary use for Anty would be in hospitals to cheer up little sick patients.

I’m told the certification exam (70-536, .NET 2.0) is rather hard and a spokesperson from Msft. Learning Belgium suggested I dove into the books (2, each about 600 pages :-) ) for at least a week. So if I plan on taking this exam I better hit the books soon!

RSDownloader 2 - first screenshot!

Started working on the new version of RSDownloader, which will appropriately be called RSDownloader 2. The application has been built again from the ground up, to include unit testing and some better threading techniques. Enough about the technical side, here’s what it looks like right now:

RSDownloader 2

New features (more will follow):

  • New and more intuitive GUI.
  • Ability to pause and resume downloads (even after an application restart).
  • Even better link grabbing.
  • Load / Save links from / to files.
  • More accurate speed counter
  • Shows remaining time
  • Scheduling downloads
  • Change download order (move up/down)

The new version will also come with an installer (unlike the previous version).

If you have some new feature requests or if you’d like to test the new version (especially on Vista), please leave a comment or mail me!

Huge freeware icon collection!

When developing software, one of the hardest tasks for a programmer is to make an attractive and intuitive GUI. Since I’m not quite the designer I’d want to be, I often seek refuge by looking for some freeware application icons (open file, close, …) on Google. If you’re like me and don’t want to waste valuable programming time on designing icons, you should check out www.famfamfam.com. The author has already made 3 splendid icon packs for all sorts of applications (including a slighlty less valuable Flag pack…). A small preview:

Silk Pack
Flag Pack
Other Pack

Enjoy!
