RSDownloader 2.3 has been released, along with a new website and forum where you can find more information on the application.

In the future all news, downloads, etc. will be posted on that website. It is my intention to remove everything related to the application from this website and to the new one.

Jup here it is, the latest version of the easiest and most functional downloader tool for rapidshare.com premium account owners! The previous (2.1) version was a huge success with more than 5000 downloads, the new version fixes some bugs while introducing more features, here they are:

File uploading!
Proxy server support
Integrated Rapidshare.com administration
Support for other http based downloads (no megaupload or anything like that)
Fixed “finished files downloading 2 times” issue.
Automatic queue save and restore.
Fixed number of small bugs.

Some notes:

1) This software is for PREMIUM USERS ONLY, to make downloading and uploading to and from rapidshare more easy. It will not work without a rapidshare.com account!

2) You need to enable Direct Downloads in your Rapidshare.com settings (instructions here) or all files you download will be +-5kb.

3) The QuickStart manual has been updated.

4) Copy upload links by selecting the uploaded files and pressing CTRL-C or right clicking and selecting “Copy selected upload links”.

5) Updaters, please uninstall the 2.1 version. Importing the settings file is not supported but could be manually. Both version can be installed together though…

6) You still need the .NET Framework (>= 2.0), which you can download here, Vista users already have this, XP users might!

About a year I’ve been thinking about extending RSDownloader, let’s call it “broadening the horizon”. Since Rapidshare.com downloads are essentially the same as http/ftp downloads, I came up with an idea to develop a type of extendable application (at this time called Sputnik), which will consist of 3 parts:

A core framework which will provide lowlevel file downloading (http/ftp) and managing.
A number of builtin plugins along with 3d party (user) - developed plugins.
One application to access all of the functionality.

Essentially this is what it comes down to : users can spice the application in the way they want, for instance if you don’t have a Rapidshare.com premium account you can just disable the Rapidshare.com plugin. If you’d like to access downloads from another location, you can enable the “Remote access” plugin. If you want to add functionality to the program so it will automatically blink your backyard lights (lol) or plainly extract all rars to a specified folder, the Sputnik framework will be available to you so you can go ahead and get your hands dirty… Offcourse writing your own extensions requires some programming knowlegde.

The program itself will come in just one flavor. It’ll also include some basic plugins. At this time prototypes of several plugins have been implemented:

A Rapidshare.com plugin, for Premium users which enabled download and uploading files.
A YouTube plugin (to download youtube videos)
A remoting plugin, so you can start downloads from the other side of the globe or just chat one on one)
Notifications plugin ; so you can play a sound or display a balloon tip when transfers are finished/failed.
Http(s) and Ftp support.

I know some of these ideas might sound a little abstract but I haven’t really got a full roadmap as to where I’d like to go with Sputnik. Bottomline is that it will be open and expandable, easy to use, stable and fast. Let me keep you guys warm with some screenshots:

I hope you guys like it and understand where I’m aiming at. A first release will take place somewhere in September, together with a new website (and forum) which will be specially devoted to the application. My wish is that all of the features in RSDownloader 2.1 will also be a part of the first Sputnik version so RSDownloader users will upgrade to Sputnik. RSDownloader 2.1 critical update…

Narf! Just in the middle of the exams rapidshare.com decided they’d give their website a little makeover (for the worse I think). This affects the login and link-check process in RSDownloader 2.1. I managed to fix the application in a jiffy (about half an hour) and now it’s up and running again. I also added a failsafe, as of this version (something I should have done in the first place), the success-strings can be found and changed in the settings.xml file. So if RS.com goes in for restyling again, this won’t require me to rewrite code…

Here’s what you should do:

New users: nothing, just download the latest version here.

Updaters:

1) If you would like to keep your settings file, backup settings.xml from the install directory somewhere. If you can ditch your settings, read the bold line below.

2) Uninstall RSDownloader.

3) Download the new version here.

4) Add the bold lines to your backed up settings.xml file so it looks like this:

Note that if you are willing to reconfigure the entire app (which might not be that much work…), just a reinstall and an install will do fine!

Collage-a-gogo met de MSN Live Search API

Het wordt een algemene tendens dat grote softwarehuizen en online diensten eigen API’s publiceren voor ontwikkelaars, kijk maar naar Yahoo, Amazon, Flickr en natuurlijk Google. Het komt er dus op neer dat er verder gekeken wordt dan de standaard web-gebruiker, de developer wordt nu ook maximaal voorzien van krachtige, goed werkende API’s voor een scala aan platformen en programmeertalen waardoor online diensten steeds makkelijker te benaderen zijn binnen third-party software, dit kunnen we alleen toejuichen.

Enkele jaren terug zag ik een leuk projectje genaamd Montage-a-Google, nu heb ik als kleine test een soortgelijk (maar beperkter) programma’tje geschreven dat de MSN Live Search API gebruikt. Op een uurtje was de klus geklaard, hier zie je Collage-a-gogo in werking:

Wil je zelf ééntje maken, dan kan je hier zowel de broncode als het programma downloaden (in de bin/release map…).

Om zelf aan de slag te gaan met de MSN Live Search webservice heb je nodig:

Visual Studio 2005/2008 (eventueel de gratis Express-edition)
Een developer-id, makkelijk, snel en vooral gratis te verkrijgen hier.

Allereerst maken we een nieuw project aan binnen Visual Studio 200x, ik heb een Winforms applicatie (2.0) opgezet maar je kan evengoed een ASP.NET of WPF applicatie aanmaken.

Hierna voegen we de referentie naar de Live Search Webservice (http://soap.search.msn.com/webservices.asmx?wsdl) toe door rechts te klikken op je solution en “Add web reference” te kiezen, vervolgens geef je het adres in en druk je OK.

Zo, het zware werk is voorbij, je kan nu van start met de webservice, hieronder staat wat voorbeeldcode om een afbeelding te zoeken, meer sample code is te vinden op de officiële pagina van de Live webservice. Belangrijk om weten is dat je niet enkel op het web kan zoeken, maar ook afbeeldingen, video, adressen en telefoonnummers (in de States), ….

RSDownloader 2.1 feature preview

As you may know the linkchecker in the current RSDownloader version (2.0) isn’t working anymore. So to fix this I started coding again (it was a minor issue though…). Offcourse I got tempted to add some other features I’ve heard and thought about myself. So I dived into the source code again and added the following things:

Fresh GUI
Theme selection (currently 4)
Progressbar in the download queue for each download.
Notification of total download quota (bottom left).
Order of the columns is now changeable by drag & drop.
Fixed error with the ‘copy password’ option.
Fixed error with the ‘goto folder’ option.
Category paths (read below)!
And offcourse the link-checker issue is now fixed!
The schedule feature is now removed.

Being a daily user of RSDownloader myself I often thought about introducing some kind of system that allows you to select from multiple download folder, most people have a directory for either music, movies, series, whatever. This is now simple to do, just add a “category folder” and rightclick on the destination textbox (in the Add & check links window) and you’ll be able to choose a path.

Jolien op het net!

Onder het motto “Image is everything” heb ik het WWW nu verrijkt met een persoonlijke webstek van mijn eigenste schone, Jolien de Ville. Ik heb gekozen voor Wordpress 2.5 en een thema dat origineel voor Drupal geschreven was aangepast aan Wordpress. Mijn vriendin studeert productontwikkeling aan de Hogeschool Antwerpen en het is de bedoeling dat de site als persoonlijke portfolio dienst zal doen, hier is ie!

Af en toe krijg ik de gelegenheid om enkele van de theoretische zaken die ons worden aangeleerd om te zetten naar concrete zaken, het zij als taak of uit eigen initiatief (meestal als ik iets niet begrijp ). Eén van die zaken is het plotten van de zogenaamde Sierpinski driehoek, een fractaal die wordt geproduceerd door 3 transformaties toe te passen op een willekeurige veelhoek. De opdracht bestond er echter uit niet alleen deze driehoek te plotten, maar die opnieuw te transformeren (draaiing en verschuiving…). Het plot-programmaatje heb ik in C# geschreven (mocht eender welke taal zijn…), het resultaat zie je hieronder!

Een leuk voorbeeldje van wiskunde "in de praktijk"

Voor het vak "Algoritmen en Datastructuren II" hebben we een aantal zoekalgoritmen gezien (Brute force, KMP, Horspool, Boyer Moore en QuickSearch). Om het KMP (Knuth-Morris-Pratt) algoritme wat te doorgronden heb ik een C# implementatie hiervan gemaakt:

De broncode van de KMP search kan je hier vinden!. Misschien zal ik ook één van de andere zoekalgoritmen implementeren en hier posten.

TrayRadio, een functioneel WPF testje…

Om wat voeling te krijgen met .NET 3.0 en vooral met WPF heb ik een simpele streaming radio speler gemaakt die je ook kan bedienen vanuit de system tray. Dit klein projectje heb ik dan ook toepassend TrayRadio gedoopt, enkele screenshots ter illustratie:

Via het hoofdscherm (of tray icoon, naast de tijdsweergave rechts onderaan…) kan je een zender kiezen en afstemmen. De led links onderaan geeft een statusweergave. Verder verschijnt ook het logo van de zender, genre, een weergave van de RSS feed en kan je ook nog de webcam van de zender bekijken door over het webcam icoon te bewegen.

De configuratie van de zenders gebeurt via een simpel xml bestand:

Op deze manier kan iedereen zelf een zender toevoegen indien deze zou ontbreken, de meeste Vlaamse zenders heb ik reeds in het standaard bestand ingevoerd.
