Mijn toolset [Deel I - .NET]

    SmtpMail.Send("d.dierickx@gmail.com","everybody@world.com",".NET rocks","www.asp.net");

  • .NET is gratis!
  • .NET is constant in ontwikkeling (LINQ, Volta, ASP.NET MVC Framework, NUnit, …)

Dell’s new XPS 420 processor upgrade

If you’d be intrested in buying a new desktop, be sure to look at the new Dell XPS 420’s series, it offers an Intel QuadCore Extreme processor for just a few nickles, a real bargain as you can see:

Dell QuadCore Extreme

Just 1270 euros, that’s about double the price you’d pay for the entire system with ‘just’ the standard Quad Core Processor. Seems like Dell is focusing less on the middle class customer and more on the ‘nutcase millionaire’ customer.

Lego nostalgia!

While scattering the very edges of the web I came across this site that indexes all Lego catalogs and sets. Nostalgia struck me as I could still smell these little plastics parts as if I was ten years old. Here are a few I owned :-)

This must be the first one I had (or can remember). I usually built them and then combined all the parts of my sets to make this big town or something :-) , I actually knew some people who glued their Lego’s and then just put them on their closets, that’s sad!

I know for sure every kid has had its “pirate-period”, obsessed by coins and pirate boats, it was such a good time :-) . I remember these well, especially the monkeys that came with the sets!

That cannon alone must have given me hours of fun (it could actually shoot stuff!).

I remember dreaming about this set when I was about 8 years old, a beautiful pirate ship! I just had to have it! But, unfortunately, I never got it :-) , oh well, no harm done, I still got enough Lego’s!

I hold alot of memories to this one! When I had to go in for surgery, my dad got me this boat. It came with a small engine so I often played with it in the bathtub! Really cool this one!

The grade school I went to was that close to our home you could actually see our living room a bit, and every 6th of december I remember trying to peek over the wall, from school into our living room, to see if my parents had set up me and my brother’s presents! I remember I was so happy when I came home that friday and saw this Lego set on our table with a whole armada of candy! God I miss those days :-)

Halfway the nineties, space was the big theme in Lego’s, and especially the Space Shuttle! This was definetely the coolest set I had!

I got this set on my twelveth birthday. My mom invited my nieces over for pancakes and I remember we were fighting over it :-)

All of these images are from http://www.hccamsterdam.nl/brickfactory (orginally from the Lego company …), on that site you can find plans and offcourse all of those catalogs full of beautiful colours :-) !

Windows Vista and network printing.

I have to say I’m a very satisfied Windows Vista user (and I know there are others out there!), but just this morning I had some trouble adding a network printer (”Not enough memory available…”). Seems this is a common problem on Vista so luckily a solution has been found, which is formulated here.

December 2008 update: I was forced to return to Windows XP since my USB TV-tuner card was not working well with Vista. Working in XP now, I can’t think of another OS I would rather use…

It’s that time of year again…

Campus

Building up the routine of getting out of bed early and stuffing my brains full of (in this case) interesting but complicated study material, the new school year has kicked in. As you may know I’ve obtained my bachelor degree in applied computer science last year (Hogeschool Gent) and I’m now continuing my studies at the VUB. Some of the courses I’ll have this semester are artificial intelligence (neural networks, agents, genetic algorithms, …), Scheme (which is called ‘Interpretation of computer programs’, logics and offcourse a bunch of good old mathematics to glue it all together. No more Java, Oracle or C#. While it’s a weird step going from functional to academic programming (using Scheme and LISP), it really pushes you into building more robust, performant code, perhaps I’ll post some of my Scheme code snippets here later!

Feest in het Park!

I spent the weekend in Oudenaarde, at the Donkvijvers, where me and my lovely girlfriend attended the “Feest in het Park” music festival! Here’s what we saw and what I thought of it!

Friday

CoS

After pitching our tent, we headed for the festival grounds to watch Mintzkov, a Belgian softrock band (Mimosa, Push the faders high) who’ve just released their new album. This was a rather doll concert, quite less than I’ve expected of them actually. The female singer obviously didn’t feel like singing that much… After that we checked out Cosy Mosy who was playing a DJ set. Nice beats and a nice location! After Cosy Mosy we went to see Chicks on Speed (Wordy rappinghood, Fashion rules, …). I have to say those gals are about the craziest I’ve ever seen. Weird dancing and ever weirder songs like “My space”, “Art Rules” and much much more. Loads of fun and catchy tunes. Respect for the ladies!

On friday night we watched as Coldcut took over the Grand Mix room with it’s “Journey through sound” mix. This was a really stunning blend of both crowdpleasers (Sweet dreams) and some more underground tracks (Assasin de la police!). Also the DJ had this nifty turntable which allowed him to scratch both sound and video, really nice!

Saturday

Eikes

After a nice breakfast with some bacon & eggs and a nice barbeque lunch (which isn’t a sure thing at a festival), we headed out to the festival grounds to see Soapstarter. I hadn’t heard of the band before but they were really, really good. Easy listening funky rock. Absolutely one of the revelations of Fihp! After Soapstarter we checked out Buscemi. When you go and see Buscemi, you kinda know what to expect: funky exotic (Balkan) sounds. If you hear one song by Buscemi, you’ve kinda heard them all and I SWEAR I can hear that woman say “Henin” (as in Justine Henin) in the song “Sahib Balkan”.
After Buscemi I wanted to see Admiral Freebie, not because I’m a fan of his music but just because I wanted to see him live. I have to say I enjoyed his concert, great music and a great guy :-) !

Sunday

Puppetmastaz

Off to the festival grounds for the last day with some known and unknown names to see! First thing we saw was Jerboa. I already saw him perform a set last year at the Pukkelpop festival where it was just him, his turntables and an EFX box or two -) . For a while now he’s taken his music to the next level. Percussion, guitars and synths included, his (or their, now) beats were smoother than honey, another really great concert!
After Jerboa we saw the Puppetmastaz, which was a superfun concert! As the name suggest, they perform a kind of puppetry act in which the puppets rap some delicious lines and drop some bomb beats, really fun to watch and a nice sound. Calvin Harris (”acceptable in the eighties…”) was next on the list, fun rock with an electronic touch. Quite good, altough not really my thing…
After Harris Ladytron perfomed their usual sterile set which lacked the fun and enthousiasm we received from other bands, a bit dissapointing… Since we had more than an hour before Chromeo kicked in, we went to see Flip Kowlier (who’s going solo nowadays). If he’d worn a cowboy hat, I would have sworn he was a country singer (Jihaaaa!). I like their sound but I really HATE it that he only sings in that Western Flemish accent, only one tenth of Belgium understand, that’s just a pitty…
Down to the last one, Chromeo, which to my surprise is just a two member band, blew the roof of with an amazing, funky set! Really nice! Sexy time! :-)

Chromeo

Jolle poepje!

While I feel I’m getting old for these kind of festivals, I had a great time with my girlfriend. Saw some great bands and spoiled ourselves gastronomically (do you know anyone else that brings passion fruit to a festival? :-) ), maybe hopefully till next year Donkvijvers!
